Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from the trail conditions at the von Trapp Family Outdoor Center?

Expect classic Vermont singletrack featuring a mix of punchy climbs and flowing descents through lush forest. The terrain is known for its natural roots and rocks that provide a technical challenge, though the well-maintained trails generally offer excellent grip during the summer months.

Is the Eastern Grind suitable for beginner mountain bikers?

Absolutely - this event offers categories ranging from Novice to Pro to ensure everyone has a great day on the dirt. While the Expert loops include more technical features, the beginner-friendly courses focus on approachable trails that still deliver plenty of adrenaline.

What are the key technical features and trail names on the course?

Riders will navigate iconic sections of the Stowe trail network, often including favorites like Tap Line and Growler. You should be prepared for steady elevation gains, tight wooded corners, and natural obstacles that require focus and precise handling.

What kind of bike and tires are recommended for this XC race?

A lightweight cross-country mountain bike is the ideal tool for the Eastern Grind's elevation-heavy profile. We recommend versatile tires with a fast-rolling center and reliable side knobs - such as a 2.2 or 2.4 inch width - to handle both the hard-pack sections and the occasional slippery root.

Where should spectators go to watch the race?

The main stadium area at the von Trapp Family Outdoor Center serves as the primary hub for start-finish action. Spectators can also take short hikes to key climbing points or technical descents to cheer on the riders as they battle through the Vermont woods.

How challenging is the elevation profile for this event?

This is a true Vermont XC race, meaning climbing is a significant part of the experience. The course is designed to test your aerobic capacity with several sustained ascents, but the reward is always a high-speed, heart-pounding descent back toward the base area.

Where is the best place to park on Sunday?

Ample parking is available directly at the von Trapp Family Outdoor Center. Please follow the directional signage and instructions from event staff to ensure you are in the designated athlete or spectator zones near the registration area.
