Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Takelma Gravel Grinder unique?

The Takelma Gravel Grinder is famous for its memorable neutral rollout start through the Seven Feathers Casino Resort, followed by a challenging route through the scenic backroads of the Siuslaw National Forest and along the South Umpqua River. This event serves as the challenging finale to the Oregon Triple Crown Series, making it a must-do for gravel riders seeking a true adventure.

What kind of terrain and surfaces will I encounter?

The Takelma Gravel Grinder takes you through rugged mixed-surface backroads that combine gravel, dirt, and forest service roads in the Siuslaw National Forest. Expect scenic river views along the South Umpqua River and challenging climbing through remote sections - this is called "Takelma Tough" for a reason!

What tire and bike setup do you recommend?

A gravel or adventure bike with clearance for wider tires (40mm or larger) is ideal for navigating the mixed surfaces and rougher forest roads you'll encounter. Consider tires with good grip for loose gravel and dirt, and bring a spare tube and basic repair tools for remote sections between aid stations.

Is this event suitable for all skill levels?

While the Takelma Gravel Grinder is known as a challenging ride, the gravel community welcomes riders of all levels to experience this adventure. Check the event website for route options or distance variations, and remember that this event is about the journey and celebrating with fellow riders - pace yourself and enjoy the experience.

Will there be aid stations along the course?

Yes, aid stations are positioned along the route to support riders with water, snacks, and mechanical assistance. Check the event website for specific aid station locations and timing so you can plan your hydration and nutrition strategy for the remote sections between stations.

What should I bring for the ride?

Pack plenty of water and energy sources, a repair kit with spare tube and tire levers, a multi-tool, a headlamp (in case you're riding near dusk), sunscreen, and a light jacket for temperature changes. Since much of the course travels through the Siuslaw National Forest, bring a map or have the course downloaded on your device as backup navigation.

What happens after the ride?

The Takelma Gravel Grinder celebrates the post-ride community experience where fellow riders gather to share stories, refuel, and connect with others in the gravel cycling community. This is your chance to celebrate completing a challenging adventure in beautiful Oregon terrain.
