Should I Have Brought a Mountain Bike to the HARDERford 75?

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the HARDford 50 and HARDERford 75?

The HARDford 50 covers 50+ miles with 6,500 feet of climbing, while the HARDERford 75 is a more challenging 75-mile route with 10,300 feet of climbing. Both courses wind through the scenic Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests with the same surface mix - you can choose based on your fitness level and how much elevation gain you're ready to tackle.

What type of bike should I bring - gravel or mountain bike?

Both cyclocross and mountain bikes are great choices for these routes. Since the courses are 75% gravel, 10% dirt, and 15% pavement, a gravel bike with wider tires will handle the mixed surfaces beautifully, but if you prefer the stability and control of an MTB, that works equally well. Many riders prefer an MTB for the HARDERford 75. Choose what makes you feel confident on challenging terrain.

How many aid stations will be available on the course?

There are four fully stocked aid stops along each route, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to refuel and rehydrate as you push through the rugged terrain. These are well-positioned to support you throughout your ride in the national forests.

Is this event suitable for riders new to gravel riding?

The HARDford 50 is approachable for intermediate gravel riders looking for a solid challenge, while the HARDERford 75 is built for experienced riders who thrive on gnarly, scenic terrain. Both courses demand fitness and technical skills on mixed surfaces - if you're new to gravel, consider training on similar terrain beforehand to get the most out of this adventure.

What should I expect from the terrain and scenery?

You'll experience some of the most challenging and scenic gravel in the southeast as you ride through Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests. The courses combine rugged gravel climbs with rewarding descents and beautiful forest views - this is serious, scenic riding that rewards adventurous spirits.

Are there prizes for finishers?

Yes! Prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in each category on both courses. Check the event website for the latest details on categories and prize specifics.

What should I bring for this ride?

Pack plenty of water and snacks since you'll be out for hours on challenging terrain. We recommend bringing a basic repair kit (spare tube, pump, multi-tool), sunscreen, and appropriate gear for the weather. Since the terrain is mixed with significant climbing, a comfortable saddle and grips suited to your bike type will make a big difference - and don't forget your helmet!
