Frequently Asked Questions
What distance should I choose for my first time at The Bear 100?
The Bear 100 welcomes riders of all levels with three route options - 31, 61, and 103 miles. If you're new to gravel riding or unsure about your fitness, the 31-mile route is a perfect introduction to the remote terrain and community spirit. The 61-mile option offers a solid mid-distance challenge, while the 103-mile "Bear" is designed for experienced gravel veterans seeking an early-season endurance test in the Nicolet National Forest.
What kind of terrain and surfaces will I encounter?
The Bear 100 features remote, unpaved gravel terrain throughout all three routes, with minimal pavement sections. You'll be riding deep into the Nicolet National Forest on a mix of gravel and dirt roads - this is a true gravel adventure, not a road event.
What tire and bike setup do you recommend?
A gravel bike with appropriate tire clearance is ideal for The Bear 100. Most riders find 40-50mm gravel tires work well on the mixed surfaces of northern Wisconsin's remote terrain. Check the event website for specific tire recommendations and any updates on current course conditions that might influence your setup.
Will there be aid stations or support along the route?
The Bear 100 is designed as a remote gravel adventure in the heart of the Nicolet National Forest, so you should plan accordingly. Check the event website for detailed information about aid station locations and what amenities are available at each distance option.
What makes The Bear 100 special if I've done other gravel events?
Since 2013, The Bear 100 has built a tradition of bringing together curious first-timers and seasoned gravel veterans in Laona, WI (population 400) to explore hidden gravel and test their grit. The event is centered on community and shared adventure - after the ride, you'll find post-ride gathering where riders celebrate together and swap stories from their time in the forest.
What should I bring and how should I prepare?
For a remote gravel adventure, bring plenty of water, nutrition, and a repair kit with extra tubes and a multitool. Given the unpaved, remote nature of the terrain, strong self-sufficiency is key. Check the event website for a detailed packing list and course-specific preparation recommendations based on current conditions.
Is there parking and what are the logistics for race day?
The event is based in Laona, WI, a small community in the heart of the Nicolet National Forest. Check the event website for specific parking details, start time information, and any pre-event logistics you should know before arriving.
