Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of trail conditions should I expect for the Iceman Cometh Challenge?

Expect a mix of fast, flowy singletrack, sandy sections, and wide two-track forest roads. Because this is a November race in Northern Michigan, you must be prepared for anything from hero dirt to snow, ice, and frozen ruts.

How technical is the course, and what skill level is required?

The course is designed to be accessible for intermediate riders while offering enough speed and terrain variety to challenge the experts. While there are no major gap jumps or extreme rock gardens, the high speeds and unpredictable November weather demand solid bike handling skills.

What gear and tire setup do you recommend for this terrain?

Most riders prefer a fast-rolling cross-country tire with decent side knobs to handle the sandy corners. Given the potential for freezing temperatures, prioritize wind-blocking layers and high-quality gloves to keep your dexterity sharp for technical sections.

Is the elevation profile very aggressive?

The course features rolling terrain rather than one massive climb, creating a constant rhythm of punchy ups and fast downs. You will face steady, grinding elevation gain throughout the race, so pacing yourself is key to conquering the final miles.

Where is the best place for spectators to catch the action?

Spectators can find great vantage points near the start and finish lines, as well as at various road crossings along the course. Check the event website for the latest details on spectator access zones and designated parking areas to ensure you do not miss the finish line sprint.
